KEDGE Business School in partnership with the University of Leeds, UK invites applications for the position of a PhD scholarship in Sustainability/Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The successful candidate (UK/ EU resident) will be based on the KEDGE Marseille campus with periods of time at the University of Leeds campus.
The CSR Centre of Excellence within KEDGE Business School conducts research at the highest international standards and aims to create new knowledge in the fields of CSR and Sustainability. The members of the CSR Centre of Excellence are specialized in research in the following areas:
- Integration of environmental and social aspects into business strategies and decision making
- Measurement and control of corporate sustainability performance
- Paradoxes, tensions and trade-offs between different aspects of CSR and corporate sustainability
- Micro-foundations of CSR and corporate sustainability
- Communication and reporting of CSR including the use of social media

Business activities have an important impact on climate change through their use of resources and energy. CSR and Sustainability issues have entered the main strategy domain of corporations, which are trying to deal with climate change in many ways. From re-inventing their business models to increasing their commitments to various CSR initiatives to even redesigning their products and production processes. But no matter how business corporations are trying to deal with the increasingly complex challenges related to climate change it is certain that these challenges are increasing.
To meet these challenges, KEDGE is looking for a PhD candidate to prepare a doctoral thesis in the area of Sustainability/ Corporate Social Responsibility. Due to funding structure and fees regime, the applicant will be a UK/ EU resident. The position is for a full time PhD student located at Kedge Business School, Marseille. However, the candidate will be registered in the PhD programme at the University of Leeds, UK and fulfil all of the programme’s requirements. At Kedge Business School, the PhD candidate will be affiliated to the CSR/ Sustainability Centre of Excellence, whereas at the University of Leeds, the PhD candidate will be affiliated to the Sustainability Research Institute (SRI). Regular interaction with sponsors and colleagues both at KEDGE and at the University of Leeds is expected. The PhD will be supervised, written and examined in English language. In addition to undertaking doctoral research, there is a requirement to participate in a certain amount of CSR teaching at Kedge Business School.
Candidates will hold a Master’s degree in Sustainability Management, Environmental Management, Environmental Economics and Policy or a related discipline with undergraduate degree at least equivalent to a UK First or Upper Second class honours degree of Bachelor in an appropriate discipline. They must demonstrate a strong interest in academic research and undertaking a PhD and experience of managing a research project is a plus. Candidates must be fluent in English with a minimum British Council IELTS band score 6.0 (with not less than 5.5 in any component) or internet based TOEFL (iBT) overall 87 with not less than 20 in listening, 21 in writing, 20 in reading and 22 in speaking.
The contract is for a period of 4 years commencing January 2020. The PhD candidate will receive comprehensive support for their research activities. This includes a salary of EUR 24,600 per year as well as additional funding for research visits and international conferences. All tuition fees for the successful candidate will also be covered.
